Was Prophet Yunus Cast Onto Open Land or Not?

Not a day passes without us being faced with an atheist illogicality. Their present claim is as follows;

In verses 143, 144 and 145 of Surah As-Saffat it says: “If he had not been among those who glorify and exalt Allah, he would certainly have remained in the belly of the fish until the day people are resurrected. Then We CAST him onto the shore in a sick state.” (Diyanet translation)

But in verse 49 of Surah Al-Qalam it says: “Had a blessing from his Lord not reached him, he would certainly have been CAST onto a desolate place in a blamed state.” (Diyanet translation)

While one verse says “We cast onto the shore, another verse says he would have been cast”. So is there not a contradiction here?

One of the causes of this and many similar errors of the atheist friends is that they treat verses independently of the whole of the Quran. As we have mentioned in many of our writings previously published on our site, the Quran is a whole, and a criticism, a problem concerning the Quran can be solved and reach a result by again being presented to the whole of the Quran. https://kurandaceliskiolmaz.net/kuran-anlasilmasi-zor-bir… Now let us take up the verses in question together and examine whether there is a contradiction as claimed.

Let us begin the subject first by learning the story of what happened to Prophet Yunus;

Remember the Companion of the Fish (Yunus too); when he had gone off in an angry state and because of this thought that We would not put him into hardship….. (Surah Al-Anbiya 87 ).

In this verse in Surah Al-Anbiya, Prophet Yunus’s becoming angry is shown as the reason for his leaving his people. There is a situation/detail here to which we must draw attention. That is, Prophet Yunus’s anger is not against Allah, but against his people. According to the verse, Prophet Yunus, angry with his people, left his people although there was no command from Allah. Yet in the Quran, we see that the Messengers’ departures from their communities were always with Allah’s permission . (See; Surah Ash-Shu'ara 52, Surah Hud 36-37, Ash-Shu'ara, 169-171 ). Therefore, Prophet Yunus’s leaving his community, without waiting for Allah’s command about the fate of his people, by a wrong decision and also thinking that Allah would not put him into hardship, went against Allah’s law. Thus the trial ordained for Prophet Yunus began.

The events after Prophet Yunus left his people develop as follows:

  1. When he had fled to a laden ship.
  2. Thus he had joined the casting of lots and had been among the losers.
  3. If he had not been among those who glorify (Allah greatly),
  4. He had remained stuck in its belly until the day (people) are raised-and-resurrected.
  5. Finally, while he was in a sick state, We CAST him onto a bare place (the shore).
  6. And over him We grew a tree of a kind (resembling a gourd) with thick-broad leaves.
  7. We sent him (as a prophet) to a hundred thousand or (in number) even more (a community).

(Surah As-Saffat, 140-147)

As a result of the wrong ijtihad he made, Allah puts Prophet Yunus into hardship. Thereupon Prophet Yunus glorifies Allah and prays.

In the darknesses (in the belly of the fish) he had called out: ‘There is no god but You, You are exalted, truly I have been among the wrongdoers’ (Surah Al-Anbiya,87)

“And We accepted his prayer and rescued him from grief. This is how We rescue those who believe.” (Surah Al-Anbiya 88 )

As is also stated in verse 143 of Surah As-Saffat, “If he had not been among those who glorify (Allah greatly),” if he had not repented and taken refuge in Allah, he would have been left, cast, onto open land/the shore in a blamed state, as mentioned in Surah Al-Qalam verse 49.

Be patient with the judgment of your Lord, do not be like the Companion of the Fish. When, choked with anger, he had called out. Had a blessing from his Lord not reached him, he would surely have been CAST onto a desolate land in a state to be blamed. But his Lord chose him and made him one of the righteous. (Surah Al-Qalam, 48-49-50)

As a result, these two verses, that is, Surah As-Saffat 145 and Surah Al-Qalam 49, must be understood in this way. Indeed there is no contradiction of meaning or logic between these two verses.
