In the Qur'an, people are invited to reflect upon the heavens, the earth, the mountains, the stars, plants, seeds, animals, the alternation of night and day, their own birth, rain and many other created beings, and to investigate these created things. A person who examines them will see God's artistry of creation in all beings, and will thus come to know our Lord, Who created him and the whole universe from nothing.
One of the ways of investigating the universe and all the beings in it, and of discovering God's artistry of creation and making it known to people, is "science". Religion therefore regards science as a way of reaching the details of God's artistry of creation, and for this reason it encourages science.
Just as religion encourages scientific research, scientific research guided by the truths of Islam also yields very rapid and accurate results. This is because religion gives the truest and most accurate answer to the question of how the universe and life came into being. Consequently, research that begins from the right starting point will uncover the secrets of the origin of the universe and of living things in the shortest time and with the least expenditure of labour and energy. As Albert Einstein, regarded as one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century, said, "science without religion is lame"; that is, science that is not guided by religion cannot advance, takes a very long time to reach accurate results and, very often, cannot reach any result at all.
It is plain to see how much time has been wasted, especially over the last two centuries, by the scientific studies of scientists with a materialist ideology who are unable to see this truth, how much of the work done along this path has been in vain, and how trillions in resources spent on it have been thrown to the winds.
For this very reason, there is a truth that people must know with certainty: science can achieve correct results only if its aim is to investigate God's infinite might and the evidence of creation in the universe, and if it works towards this aim. If its path is correctly determined, that is, if it is rightly guided, science can be enabled to reach its true goal in the shortest possible time.
