Or les mutations sont toutes nuisibles et n'ont d'autre effet que d'estropier les êtres vivants. La fuite radioactive survenue à Tchernobyl est l'un des signes des dommages causés par les mutations. Après cette catastrophe, on a observé chez un grand nombre de personnes des troubles graves et permanents, comme diverses maladies telles que la leucémie, ou des malformations à la naissance.
